Colorado House District 49
October 1st, 2011

Greetings,

It is a great honor and very humbling to serve the people of House District 49 and the State of Colorado in the General Assembly.  I’d like to thank you for the opportunity.

I got involved in politics years ago when my kids were little because I was very concerned about the direction our country and our state was taking.  I felt that government was getting out of control and I wanted to help make a difference, so I got involved in learning about the issues and I also worked hard to help get good people elected to office.  I still believe the same thing today as I did then.  And, I know what Edmund Burke said is true,  “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” (Edmund Burke).

My desire is to work for you while serving in the Legislature.  I do my best to answer every email and sincerely delight in helping solve problems my constituents may have with state government bureaucracies.

I know that taxpayers do not need burdens placed upon them by government, especially now during one of the worst economic downturns our state has ever seen. I promise to keep your interests in mind while searching for, creating and implementing solutions to the challenges we face.

House Republicans are working hard to reverse harmful trends implemented the past several years by a Democrat controlled state house that adversely affected businesses and people in Colorado —  we are succeeding!

Because of having the Majority in the Colorado House of Representatives for the first time in years, Republicans were in a position to effectively fight for a responsible budget and defend Colorado’s economy from extreme positions.

We stopped many harmful proposals presented by Democrats, including these few:  A plan to mandate wage and benefit requirements for “certain” businesses (HB1238).  In addition, we stopped a wage and benefit mandate that would have required certain state public works contractors to provide “prevailing wages” and fringe benefits to their workers (HB 1070).  We also stopped Washington-style “Pay-As-You-Go” failed deficit causing policies to come to our state.

House Republicans passed many good measures which will help individuals and small businesses in the state.  A few of them are:

We fought for a responsible budget – one which spends hundreds of millions less than the prior year and it includes 700 fewer government positions.  It also does not rely on short term fixes or tax hikes.

House Republicans successfully fought for and repealed two of the Democrats “Dirty Dozen” tax increases from 2010 (HB1005, 1293).  We passed a third bill (Amazon tax HB1318) and it was killed by Senate Democrats.  We cannot un-do every onerous piece of legislation immediately, but we will continue to work against tax increases – like Proposition 103 which if passed will be one of the largest tax increases in Colorado history.

We passed a number of good bills in the House this year, including the HOPE Act (HB1273) which would have protected our state sovereignty by Opting Colorado OUT of ObamaCare (my bill).  It was killed by Senate Democrats.   We passed another bill in the House to create a Rainy Day Fund (1280) and reinstate the state spending limit that Democrats repealed in 2009.  We also passed a Resolution calling upon Congress to pass a Balanced Budget Amendment (HJR1017) and another to provide relief to small businesses from the onerous Business Personal Property Tax (HB1141 and 1263).  The resolution and those two bills were also killed by Senate Democrats.

I am grateful to Coloradans for restoring a Balance of Powers to the state of Colorado by not allowing one political party the power to control all three branches of government in Colorado.  A Balance of Powers is good and the House of Representatives has provided the “Brakes” which the state has needed.

I am very encouraged and hopeful that the best is yet to come for us as Coloradans.  And, I invite you to work with me to make a difference for the State of Colorado.   If you are interested in working on my re-election campaign, please give me a call.
